The only good painting of Dana Schutz
It might sound too harsh but it’s true. DAD is almost a loving incantation muffled by the viewing silence and the distance insinuated by the ocean. What a touching image resonating with all humanity. I saw it roughly 10 years ago and was left with a tinge of pain and warmth that started to find its voice in my recent paintings. I want to paint something about love, desire, longing, bonds and separation, those eternal and cyclical subjects. Schutz is probably not able to see beyond herself, with all her visible insecurities blinding her vision.
